Community Member Spotlight

July 31, 2019 by Amy Steele 1 Comment

I wanted to take a moment out of our busy schedules to acknowledge our community members who donate time, money and other important contributions that help make our community great! These people are the unsung heroes of a community doing their part to make this beautiful town a better place for all of us.

I am hoping to make this a regular feature and I thought what better place to start then with Darryl Bell.

Darryl out maintaining the Boswell Diamond

I happened to catch Darryl in action while he was out grading the Boswell Ball diamond, he was then on his way to our other town ball diamond Hereward to do the same thing. These diamonds are used by our Minor Ball league as well as a men’s league, Sunday Co-ed ball and pick-up baseball. You may not realise it but there is a lot involved with keeping a ball diamond in good condition so that our community can enjoy them.

As President of Minor ball (Grand Valley River Hawks), Darryl already has a multitude of duties that he is responsible for however he makes the time to take care and maintain these diamonds, in doing so he saves minor ball a good amount of money which helps keep Grand Valley baseball league fees affordable and accessible. You can feel the sense of pride that Darryl has over keeping these diamonds in tip-top condition and I have never heard him complain about all the work he does not even once.

Coach Darryl a few years back with his team

Darryl has also volunteered his time coaching both baseball and hockey in town. Over the years many kids have benefited from his knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication.

Darryl received the “Outstanding Contribution to Minor Hockey Award” April 2019

Speaking of Hockey, Darryl has not only volunteered his time on the ice as a coach but also sat on the Grand Valley Minor Hockey executive board for many years including the role of President.

I have highlighted a few ways that Darryl contributes behind the scenes to help make this community great but I am sure I have missed mentioning many more.

Thank you Darryl for all your countless hours of hard work, dedication and enthusiasm. Our small town and its residents are better because of it!
