Have you ever thought about having a beehive in your backyard? Beekeeping as a hobby has become increasingly popular and we are lucky enough to have a beekeeping supply business right on our doorstep!
Meet Michael der Kinderen and Melissa Greenwood aka the “Derkwoods” who are the owners and operators of Derkwood Beekeeping Supplies. I had the chance to meet up with Michael and Melissa at their property just outside of the urban area of Grand Valley.

Michael is a local volunteer firefighter who moved to Grand Valley back in 2007 and Melissa was born and raised in the Valley where her family has lived for generations.
Michael had started beekeeping as a hobby back in 2014. Melissa is allergic to bees and hadn’t really enjoyed the taste of honey but once she had a taste of honey right from the hive she was converted. Together they enjoy the hard work, quality time and effort that it takes to maintain hives and of course they love the sweet honey that you get as a reward!!!

Michael and Melissa joined the Dufferin Beekeepers Association and it was at one of the Associations meetings that the idea for their beekeeping supply business was created. Up until Micheal and Melissa opened up their business in February 2021 local beekeepers had to make the trek to Cookstown, Innisfil or Guelph to get supplies.
If you are not in the market for beekeeping supplies there is still something for you at the Derkwood store. Just as you enter you can find some Derkwood honey that is harvested from the over 40 hives that are on the property as well as home decor and body care products that are handcrafted by Melissa…. do not leave without getting a jar of the Whipped Body Butter (warm gingerbread scent) and if you need a quick gift idea they have 125ml jars of Raw Derkwood Honey for $5.50/jar.

I have never personally thought about beekeeping as a hobby but Michael and Melissa are so kind, welcoming and generous with their knowledge that I may have to think about trying it out. Even if I don’t actually take the leap I know I will be back to stock up on my body butter, lotions, lip balm and that amazing local honey of course!
