Shinder Atwal is the owner and Creative Director of PDS Design & Co which is based in Grand Valley. I first saw Shinder’s work on Instagram and was able to meet her in person at a local Christmas Market. I scooped up one of Shinder’s works of art for my daughters teacher, I was super impressed with the care and detail that goes into each of Shinder’s pieces.
How PDS Design & Co got its start?
Shinder started her business in 2019 while on maternity leave with her first born. Shinder said she wanted something that she could do for herself as she knew she wasn’t going to be returning back to work after her leave was over.
Shinder realized quickly that she wanted to turn this creative pursuit into something she did full-time while having the flexibility to stay home and raise her kids (she now has two littles!). Shinder said her business is continuing to evolve but she said the business is growing and she keeps adding loyal clientele each year.
Moving to East Luther Grand Valley
Shinder is a Teacher by profession and she married her husband in 2015. They moved to Grand Valley in 2017 and Shinder commuted to Brampton to teach Grade 4 for a year until she had her first child in 2018. Shinder made the decision to stop the commute and stay home to raise her children and grow her business and in September 2021 they welcomed another child into the family.
Shinder said she loves teaching and still misses it but she appreciates the flexibility that working her own hours gives her. Shinder said she can be with her kids and still have this creative outlet for herself and create beautiful keepsakes.
Most Popular Product?
Shinder said her most popular product is hands down the floral shadow boxes. From floral initials to full box frames, the flower boxes make perfect gifts for any occasion. Shinder makes all the flowers by hand, she said she cuts the strips of paper and then while the kids are napping/playing she wraps them into flowers and creates her custom pieces.
What do you Love most about Grand Valley?
Shinder said the thing she loves most about Grand Valley is the people. Shinder said everybody is so kind, and she and her husband felt that in the first few months of living here. Shinder said she loves how close-knit the community is and almost everyone knows everyone. The river is her absolute favourite spot to visit during the warmer months.
