I first met Alexis at a Grand Valley Mom’s night she hosted a couple of years ago( pre-pandemic). I was one of the first to arrive and as soon as she opened the door I felt immediately at ease as she welcomed me into her home. I can see how Alexis’s warm and inviting personality makes her a great fit in her profession as a postpartum and birth Doula.

You may be asking what is a Doula? When I chatted with Alexis she explained a doula’s primary role is to support both the birthing mom and partner through their birth and afterwards. Managing pain with many techniques to help with keeping mom comfortable and to have as enjoyable as possible labour and delivery., with fewer medical interventions. Postpartum care is important to alleviate the stress of having a newborn at home.

Alexis became a doula because of the lack of support for women during their birth. Alexis said she finds there is a gap for support for women in hospitals and at home afterwards that is important and necessary and is rarely addressed. Alexis truly believes in women fully supporting women and that is the number one reason she became a doula.
Alexis and her family moved to Grand Valley 6 years ago. Alexis said the sense of community is so prevalent here and they just love living here. So much so that they even encouraged Alexis’s parents and a few of their friends to buy homes in Grand Valley as well!
When I asked Alexis what she loves most about Grand Valley she said it is wonderful knowing your neighbours and spending time with them. They have created lifelong friendships with so many of their neighbours in Grand Valley.
